Format the list after you believe the list

The useful search is not “auto APA from ChatGPT.” The useful search is how to get the sources you were shown into a document you can edit, click, and delete from. Models omit links, invent authors, and merge two real papers into one imaginary title. A bibliography style applied to that mess only makes it look submitted. So the workflow is: capture the Markdown, throw out what you cannot open, convert, then apply Word’s styles to what remains.

Nothing here is a license to skip a literature search. If your course bans undeclared AI writing, follow the course. The converter does not disclose anything for you; a sentence in your methods section is still your sentence.

Get the sources onto the clipboard

1. Copy the assistant answer. Read the bottom. If you see titles without URLs, go back to the chat UI and copy any source cards that did not travel.
2. Paste into the converter. Add a heading ## References if the model used a vague label like “Sources:” as a bold line. The heading is what Word will show in the Navigation pane.
3. Turn bare URLs into Markdown links when you know the title: the link text should be something a reader can scan, with the URL as the target.
4. Delete any reference you did not open. Do this in the left pane so you do not forget after the file looks polished.
5. Download .docx. Click each remaining hyperlink in Word.

What the file gives you, and what Word still owes

Inline markers versus a real reference entry

A paragraph that ends with a bracketed number is not a citation until a matching entry exists and you have opened it. Keep the marker and the entry in sync while you delete. If the model used author-date in the sentence and a full entry below, you can keep that shape; just do not trust the punctuation. Footnote objects inside Word are also a later step. This converter does not turn Markdown-looking footnotes into Word footnote fields. If you need a true footnote, insert it in Word and point it at the reference you checked.

Perplexity’s product is built around a source list, so the copy steps differ slightly. Use Perplexity to Word when the text came from there. NotebookLM markers point at your uploaded files rather than at the open web; name those files in the references section, and follow NotebookLM to Word for the brief itself.

Equations and quoted tables in the same paper

A methods paragraph with LaTeX and a results table can ride along in the same paste. Math that converts becomes an editable Word equation; a table becomes cells. Neither of those features checks scientific accuracy. Fix the citation list first, then the numbers. Splitting the jobs across three tools is how a quote gets separated from its source.
