Claude responses are typically Markdown. Artifacts, Projects, and the chat are three clipboards

Claude’s chat reply, an Artifact panel, and a Project file feel like one product and copy differently. The chat Copy control is usually real Markdown: headings, tables, and fences. An Artifact is a single document or a single file preview — copy the artifact body, not the surrounding “I’ll create that for you” turn, or the Word file starts with a status sentence and then the spec. A Project holds many files; this page will not open the project. Copy the one file you are handing off, or paste several under headings if the handoff is a packet.

Extended thinking, when the UI shows it, is scratch work. Leave it out of the .docx unless a reviewer asked for the trace. The failure mode matches DeepSeek’s, but the button labels do not — so do not follow a ChatGPT-only tutorial and then wonder why the first page is chain-of-thought.

Heading levels Claude tends to flatten

Claude often bold-labels a section (“Risks”, “Recommendation”) instead of using a hash heading. In Word that becomes a bold sentence, and the Navigation pane stays empty. Before you download, promote the labels that are really sections. Demote anything that is just a UI-like kicker. Lists inside Artifacts are usually clean; numbered steps that restart under each heading should stay as separate Markdown lists so Word does not weld them into one sequence.

Code artifacts deserve a monospace block, not a screenshot of the panel. The code-block guide explains the limits: indentation survives, syntax colors do not. Math artifacts use the same LaTeX path as LaTeX to Word. If the artifact is HTML or SVG preview rather than text, copy the source only when you want that source in the document — a rendered preview does not become an editable drawing.

Typical workflow

1. Decide whether the deliverable is the chat turn or the artifact. Copy that one.
2. Paste into the converter (or drop a .md you already saved) and check the live preview.
3. Add Markdown headings where Claude used bold labels you need in the outline.
4. Download .docx, or Copy formatted into a Doc that is already open.
