ChatGPT to Word Methods
For one answer you can already copy, paste it into this converter and download
.docx. Direct paste keeps the Markdown characters. A browser extension is for
capturing the chat tab. ChatGPT has no dedicated Export to Word button.
Copy-paste vs extension vs ChatGPT download vs this converter
Read the formulas column and the paragraph-direction column first. Where a public spec does not settle the cell, the cell says see their site.
| Method | Formulas | Paragraph direction | Tables, code, Mermaid | Install | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copy and paste into Word | LaTeX delimiters stay as text in the paragraph. Word does not build them into an equation object. | Word applies its own handling to the characters you paste. That paste does not run this site’s first-strong-letter rule. | Hash marks, pipes, and fences stay as characters. | None, beyond Word. | No converter fee. Word’s own license is separate — see Microsoft. |
| Browser extension | see their site | see their site | see their site | A browser add-on, plus permission to read the ChatGPT tab. iPhone Safari does not run Chrome extensions. | see their site |
| ChatGPT’s own download | see their site | see their site | see their site | None. There is no dedicated Export to Word button. Settings → Export data is an HTML and JSON ZIP, not Word. Some chats can create a file with ChatGPT’s file tools; availability varies, and those links expire. | Included with the ChatGPT account you already use. Plan price — see OpenAI. |
| Paste converter (this site) | Supported LaTeX becomes an editable Word equation (OMML). A fragment that does not convert is labeled [Math — could not convert: …]. | Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Urdu paragraphs (first strong letter) export right-to-left: bidirectional and right-aligned. English paragraphs stay left-to-right. | GFM tables become Word tables. Fenced code stays monospace with a language label. A mermaid fence that renders is embedded as an image. | None. Paste or drop a file. Conversion runs in the browser and is not uploaded. | 2 exports per day per browser are free. Pro is $4.99 once: it removes that daily limit and adds batch ZIP plus brand header/footer. See Pricing. |
Formulas
Supported LaTeX on this site becomes a native Word equation object (OMML) you can edit with
Word’s equation tools. Dollar math, \(...\) and \[...\], and a
detected dirty wrapper such as ( E = mc^2 ) are the forms the converter looks
for. A fragment it cannot parse stays in the file as
[Math — could not convert: …].
A direct paste leaves the dollars and backslashes in a normal paragraph. ChatGPT’s file
tools sometimes return a .docx; whether each formula in that file is an
editable equation is visible only in the file you got. Extension listings do not share one
equation format — see their site. The math walkthrough is
LaTeX to Word.
Right-to-left paragraph direction
This converter sets Word paragraph direction from the first strong letter. Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Urdu paragraphs are written right-to-left (bidirectional, and aligned to the right). An English paragraph stays left-to-right. Code fences and equation paragraphs are not marked right-to-left by that rule, and inline code inside a right-to-left paragraph stays left-to-right. A table that contains a right-to-left cell is marked visually right-to-left.
Copy-paste uses Word’s handling of those characters, not this rule. Browser extensions and files ChatGPT generates do not publish one shared right-to-left paragraph rule — see their site.
Install, upload, and price
This converter does not install an add-on and does not upload the Markdown to build the
.docx. The free tier is 2 exports per day per browser. Download .docx, Copy
formatted, HTML download, and print-to-PDF each count as one. Pro is a one-time $4.99
payment on Pricing. It removes the daily limit and adds batch ZIP
and brand header/footer presets. It does not renew.
Extension prices are not listed here. ChatGPT plan prices are not listed here. Both say see their site, above.
