The search is really “which method fits this answer?”
“Without an extension” usually means one of three frustrations: a work laptop that blocks
the Chrome Web Store, a phone, or a reluctance to give an unknown add-on access to every
ChatGPT page. Those are good reasons. They do not make every other method equal. A no-install
converter is the right default for a single copied answer. It is the wrong tool if you refuse
to copy and still want 200 turns archived automatically.
Compare the paths on the job, not on the slogan
The no-install sequence
- Copy the ChatGPT message. You are not granting this site access to the ChatGPT tab.
- Paste into the converter. The preview is the quality check an extension often skips.
- Download
.docx, or Copy formatted into a file you already have open on a desktop. - Open the file in Word, Word Online, or LibreOffice. Done.
That is the whole product surface for this job. Pro at the launch price adds batch ZIP and brand headers;
it is not required to convert. Pricing sits below the article and does not gate the button.
Why “ask the model for a Word file” keeps disappointing
In some chats, ChatGPT can create a downloadable document with its file tools. Availability
depends on the mode and the day. The file is generated on OpenAI’s side, the link belongs to
that chat, and complex Markdown is interpreted by a general model rather than by a converter
you can re-run. When the download 404s tomorrow, the Markdown in the thread is still the
durable source. Paste that source here and you can regenerate the .docx without
reopening the old chat.
Pandoc fans should keep using Pandoc for repositories. A reference .docx style, a makefile,
and a CI job are real advantages. They are not advantages on a library computer. If you already
exported Markdown with Pandoc and the equations or Mermaid came out wrong, you can still drop
that same .md on this page and compare the preview — Mermaid is rendered in the
browser to an image, and supported LaTeX becomes OMML. Details:
Mermaid to Word and
LaTeX to Word.
Permissions you do not have to grant
- No “read all sites you visit.” The converter only sees text you paste into it.
- No OpenAI API key and no ChatGPT password.
- No desktop installer. The iPhone path is the same website: ChatGPT to Word on iPhone.
If the real goal is every message in the account, an extension or OpenAI’s own data export is
the honest recommendation. Read
export a conversation before you install
something just because the landing page said “full history.”
