ChatGPT to PDF
ChatGPT to PDF on this page is the PDF button above the paste box. Paste one answer, click PDF, and choose “Save as PDF” in the browser’s print dialog. The dialog prints the preview article. It does not typeset formulas, and it does not wait for a Mermaid diagram to finish drawing.

What ChatGPT to PDF prints
The button does not call a PDF library and it does not upload the Markdown. It copies the live preview into a print-only region, hides the site header, the footer, and the converter, and calls your browser’s print function. The status line says to choose “Save as PDF”. On macOS that destination is often already “Save as PDF”. On Windows you may see “Microsoft Print to PDF” or “Save as PDF”, depending on the browser. The wording is the operating system’s, not ours.
What lands in the file is the HTML preview: heading sizes, lists, a real HTML table, monospace
fences, and links. The preview colors a few languages (JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, shell)
with a small highlighter. Those colors can show up in the print because the dialog prints that
HTML. The .docx download does not copy that coloring. If you need the Word file’s
objects — heading styles, an editable equation, a diagram image — the PDF button is the wrong
control. Use ChatGPT to DOCX and save as PDF from Word afterward.
Math is the clearest gap. The preview does not draw a typeset equation. It shows the LaTeX source in italic, inside a tinted box, with a tooltip that the editable equation arrives on download. Printing therefore prints the source, backslashes included, not an OMML object and not ChatGPT’s rendered math. A reader who expected a textbook formula will see the code of the formula. That is honest preview behavior, and it is a bad final PDF when the formula is the point.
Save the answer in four steps
- In ChatGPT, use the message’s Copy control. A drag-select of the bubble often drops fence newlines and turns a table into wrapped lines. Copy keeps the Markdown.
- Paste into the box on this page. Read the preview. If the box is empty, PDF does not open a useful document: the button asks you to paste first.
- Click PDF. In the dialog, pick the save-as-PDF destination, check the page size, and save. The print view is the preview only. Our navigation is hidden.
- Open the PDF once before you send it. Look for a fence cut in half, a table header stranded on the previous page, a formula that is still LaTeX, and a diagram that still says it is rendering. If any of those are true, throw the PDF away and follow the Word path below.
The same paste accepts a dropped .md or .txt file. A drop is not a
second converter. Several files at once are the batch ZIP on
Pricing, and that ZIP is .docx files, not PDFs. Pro does
not add a PDF engine.
Printing the ChatGPT page itself
People reach for the browser’s print command while the chat is still on screen. That prints chatgpt.com, not an article. The sidebar, the model picker, the composer, suggestion chips, and the copy buttons are part of the page. A long answer sits in a narrow column. Code fences in that column scroll sideways; print often clips the right-hand side or wraps a line in the middle of a token. A wide table is squeezed to the chat width, so columns stack or overflow. Formulas that ChatGPT has already drawn can break between a numerator and a denominator when the browser chooses a page boundary. None of that is a setting you get back inside a PDF reader. The text is not a Word heading, and there is no equation object to repair.
You also have to be signed in to print a private chat, and the PDF contains whatever chrome
was visible. A shared link page adds the share-page header on top of the thread. This site
never fetches a chatgpt.com/share URL. Copy the answers you want, as
the share-link guide explains, then print the preview
or, better, download the .docx.
Use ChatGPT to PDF from this preview when you want the chrome gone and you have already checked that the answer is short, has no diagram you must keep, and has no formula that must be drawn. A status note, a short list, or a letter-style answer survives. A lab report does not.
| Job | Print the chat page | PDF button on this page | Download .docx, then Save as PDF in Word |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome around the answer | Sidebar, composer, buttons | Hidden. The preview article prints. | Not in the file |
| Headings | Visual size only | HTML headings in the print | Word heading styles, then whatever outline Word writes into the PDF |
| Tables | Often clipped to the chat column | HTML table. A row can split across pages. | A Word table. You can keep a row together before you export. |
| Code | Horizontal scroll, then clip or a bad wrap | Monospace preview. A fence can split. A few languages show preview colors. | Monospace, language label, no syntax-color theme. You control the break in Word. |
| Formulas | ChatGPT’s drawn math, which can split mid-formula | LaTeX source text, not a drawn equation | An editable Word equation when the LaTeX converts, drawn by Word in the PDF |
| Mermaid | The image the chat already drew, if it fits | Often still the “rendering” line, because print does not wait | A PNG in the .docx when the diagram renders, then that picture in the PDF |
| Editable later | No | No | The .docx stays editable. The PDF does not. |
Code blocks, tables, and formulas across page breaks
The print stylesheet sets the preview’s visibility and a half-inch padding. It does not set
break-inside: avoid on a fence, a table, or a formula box. The browser is free to
cut a function between two lines, to put a table header on one page and the first data row on
the next, and to slice a display-math box. Inline math is also marked nowrap in
the preview, so a long formula can run past the page edge instead of wrapping. Those are
properties of this print path. They are the same class of failure people see when they print
the chat, with one difference: the chat adds clipping from a scrollable column, and this path
adds a LaTeX-source formula instead of a drawn one.
Code in the preview keeps indentation and a language label when the fence had one. A long line
does not gain a soft wrap from us. The browser decides whether to shrink the page, clip the
line, or wrap it. The .docx stores each fence line as its own monospace paragraph
in Consolas, still without a syntax theme, which is the behavior described on
ChatGPT code to Word. In Word you can set that paragraph to
keep lines together, narrow the margins, or accept a wrap, and only then export PDF. You cannot
do that repair inside the print dialog after the fact.
Tables follow the same split. GitHub-flavored pipe tables become a real HTML table in the
preview and a real Word table in the .docx, including left, center, and right
alignment from the separator row. The print of the HTML table has no repeating header and no
“keep row together” switch. The Word table does, once you open it. If the answer is mostly a
table, start from ChatGPT table to Word, export PDF from
Word, and do not expect the print dialog to paginate a wide grid.
Formulas are a third file, not a third print setting. Supported forms — $...$,
$$...$$, \(...\), \[...\], and a dirty wrapper the
converter recognizes as math — become OMML in the .docx when parsing succeeds.
A fragment that does not parse stays in the Word file with an explicit
[Math — could not convert: …] label. The PDF button never takes that OMML path.
It prints the preview source. Word’s Save as PDF draws the equation Word holds. Google Docs is
the awkward middle: open the .docx there, check one equation, and only then use
File → Download → PDF. Docs import often turns the equation into a picture or into text, which
ChatGPT to Google Docs already warns about. A PDF made
after that flatten cannot be edited back into an equation.
Diagrams, right-to-left text, and images
Mermaid is asynchronous. Pasting a fence starts a render in the preview. Clicking PDF rebuilds
the preview and immediately copies it into the print region. The copy usually still contains
the line “Rendering Mermaid diagram…”, because drawing has not finished, and the button does
not wait. The .docx path does wait: a diagram that renders is embedded as a PNG,
and a diagram that fails stays as the source fence plus an explicit note. For a flowchart that
must appear as a picture, use Mermaid to Word, download the
.docx, and save that file as PDF. Printing the chat can capture a diagram the chat
UI already drew, and it can also clip it. Neither browser print replaces the PNG in the Word file.
Right-to-left text is a preview behavior in this PDF, not the Word flag. The preview sets
dir="auto" on blocks, so the browser uses the first strong character to choose a
direction for the print. That is not the same as the .docx rule. In the Word file,
a paragraph whose first strong letter is Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Urdu is marked
bidirectional and right-aligned. An English paragraph stays left-to-right. Code fences and
equation paragraphs are not marked right-to-left by that rule, and inline code inside a
right-to-left paragraph stays left-to-right. A table that contains a right-to-left cell is
marked visually right-to-left. The print dialog does not write those Word properties, because
it does not write a Word file. If the reader opens the PDF, they see the browser’s layout of
the preview. If they must have the Word direction flags, download the .docx.
Remote images are a third mismatch. The preview can show an image URL. The .docx
embeds the bytes when the browser can fetch them: JPEG, PNG, GIF, or BMP, at most 2,000,000
bytes, with an eight-second timeout. If the fetch fails, the Word file keeps the alt text and
the link. A picture you uploaded inside ChatGPT often has no public URL on the clipboard, so
neither the PDF nor the .docx receives the pixels. Paste the image into Word
yourself, then save as PDF. The print dialog will include an image only when the preview HTML
already has it, and the browser may still drop it if the URL is blocked.
ChatGPT to PDF from the .docx when the dialog is the wrong file
Download .docx when any of the checks above failed, or when you already know the
answer has a formula, a diagram, or a table you will be graded on. Open the file in Microsoft
Word, Word Online, or LibreOffice. Fix the page: keep a fence with the next line, repeat a
header row, or insert a break before a section. Then use the application’s Save as PDF, Export
to PDF, or Download as PDF. Word draws OMML equations into that PDF. LibreOffice draws what it
was able to keep. Word Online’s export follows Word Online’s layout, which is close to the
desktop file and is not this site’s print stylesheet.
On iPhone, the print dialog is the unreliable half. Download the .docx to Files
and open it in Word, then share as PDF. The click path for the file itself is
ChatGPT to Word on iPhone. Do not depend on Safari’s
print sheet to name a destination the same way a desktop browser does.
Google Docs is a reasonable PDF source only after you have looked at one equation and one
table. Upload is your upload into Drive, separate from this conversion, which stays in the
browser. If Docs flattened the equation, the PDF will flatten it too. Keep the .docx
as the editable original and send the PDF as the reading copy.
A whole thread is the same rule, repeated. Paste the turns you want under headings, as export a conversation describes. The PDF button prints only what is in the box. It does not walk your ChatGPT history. Canvas text has to be copied from the canvas panel first; see ChatGPT canvas to Word. OpenAI’s account export ZIP is HTML and JSON, not a PDF and not a Word file.
Limits, privacy, and what this PDF is not
The free tier is 2 exports per day per browser. Download .docx, Copy formatted,
HTML, and the PDF button each count as one. Pro is a one-time $4.99 payment. It removes that
daily limit and adds batch ZIP plus brand header and footer text. It does not turn the print
dialog into a different PDF, and it does not add page-break controls. Details stay on
Pricing. Nothing on this page changes that limit.
Conversion and the print stay on your device. We do not receive the Markdown in order to build the PDF. The browser’s print system may write a file wherever you tell it to. That save is yours. See the Privacy Policy.
This PDF is not a form, not PDF/A, and not a tagged archive we certify. We do not set a PDF
title, a language mark, or bookmarks. The browser writes whatever metadata its print-to-PDF
driver writes. It is not an editable copy of the answer. It is not a substitute for the
.docx when someone will comment in Word next week. Use ChatGPT to PDF when a
reader only needs to scroll a clean article and you have checked the page breaks. Use the Word
file when the document still has work left in it.
The walkthrough for the Word download, including the same paste, is
how to export ChatGPT to Word.
The homepage converter is the same tool, aimed at the .docx button:
ChatGPT to Word.
A note that was never a chat, and a table of which Markdown features survive in the Word file,
is Markdown to DOCX.

PDF export FAQ
The print dialog, formulas, diagrams, page breaks, and the same free export limit as the other buttons.
Does the PDF button build a PDF file on a server?
No. It opens your browser’s print dialog on the live preview and asks you to choose “Save as PDF”. The Markdown is not uploaded to make that printout.
Will formulas look typeset in that PDF?
No. The preview shows LaTeX source in italic, and the print dialog prints that source. Supported LaTeX becomes an editable Word equation only in the .docx. For a typeset formula in a PDF, download the .docx and use Word’s Save as PDF. Google Docs often flattens those equations on import, so check one formula before you download a PDF from Docs.
Will a Mermaid diagram be in the PDF?
Do not count on it. The PDF button reprints the preview immediately, while diagram drawing finishes in the background. The print often still says the diagram is rendering. Download .docx, which embeds a PNG when the diagram renders, and save that Word file as PDF.
Can I keep a code block from splitting across pages?
Not from the print dialog. This site does not set page-break rules on fences, tables, or formula boxes. Open the .docx in Word, keep the block together with Word’s paragraph settings, then save as PDF.
Is a PDF a separate paid export?
No. The PDF button is the same free export control as Download .docx, Copy formatted, and HTML. The free tier is 2 exports per day per browser, and each of those actions counts as one. Pro is the one-time $4.99 unlock on the Pricing page: it removes that daily limit and adds batch ZIP and brand header/footer text. It does not change the printout.
What if my phone has no Save as PDF choice?
Mobile print dialogs differ. Download the .docx into Files, open it in Word, and use the share sheet to make a PDF. That is the reliable phone path.
Does printing chatgpt.com do the same job?
It prints the chat page: sidebar, composer, and buttons, plus a column that clips wide code and wide tables. This dialog hides our chrome and prints the preview article. Neither path is a typeset report. Use the .docx when page breaks, equations, or diagrams matter.
