ChatGPT to Word on iPhone

Desktop instructions fail as soon as they mention an extension

Most “export ChatGPT to Word” posts assume a laptop: a browser extension, a right-click, or Pandoc in a terminal. None of that is available in the ChatGPT iOS app. What you do have is a copy button, Safari, and the Files app. That is a complete path if you treat the .docx as a download, not as a rich paste between apps.

iPad is the same idea with more screen. Use Safari rather than an in-app browser sheet when the sheet will not keep a download. Word for iOS, or the Word web app in Safari, opens the file you just made.

Steps that match the iPhone UI

1. In ChatGPT, tap the copy control on the finished answer. If you only see Share, copy from the share sheet’s copy action when it is offered, or open the same chat in Safari at chatgpt.com and copy there.
2. Open Safari and go to the converter on this page. Tap the paste area and paste. Zoom the preview enough to see whether a table became a grid.
3. Tap Download .docx. If Safari asks permission to download, allow it.
4. Open Files. Look in Downloads on this iPhone, or in iCloud Drive → Downloads, depending on Safari’s setting under Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads.
5. Tap the file and choose Word if the share sheet asks which app. You can also AirDrop it to a Mac.

Keyboard users on iPad can still press ⌘+Enter to download when a hardware keyboard is attached. On a phone, use the button.

Copy formatted is the unreliable step on iOS

On a desktop, Copy formatted carries HTML into Word or Google Docs. On iOS, the clipboard often keeps the plain-text version only, so Word for iPhone receives the words without headings. That is an operating-system clipboard limit, not a reason to paste Markdown by hand. Download the file. If you need the text inside an existing Word document on the phone, open the new .docx, select the content, and copy from Word into the other document — Word-to-Word paste behaves better than Safari-to-Word.

Worked example: a site-visit list Safari will not paste as a list

This note is short enough to finish on a phone. Copy it from ChatGPT, then resist the next tap, which is Paste inside Word for iPhone. That clipboard is the failure. The download is the file.

1. Seal the threshold before Friday.
2. Photograph the dock light, not the whole wall.
3. Do not add Pico Glass to this visit.

If you paste the ChatGPT clipboard into Word on the phone

• The heading often arrives as the characters ##, or as a plain line after iOS drops the Markdown.
• threshold loses its weight. Word for iPhone received text, not the HTML half of the clipboard.
• The three steps become separate lines, or one paragraph, without a numbered style you can continue.

If you download the .docx in Safari

• “Site visit — north door” is a Word heading.
• The threshold sentence keeps the bold word.
• The three steps are a numbered list inside the file.
• The file is in Files, not in the Word app’s recents, until you open it. Look in On My iPhone → Downloads, or iCloud Drive → Downloads if Safari is set to save there. The downloads icon in Safari’s toolbar is the other place it waits.

A desktop Word window and Ctrl+V are a different job, written up as paste ChatGPT into Word. This page does not need a second URL for “Safari paste.” The phone path is: copy in ChatGPT, convert in Safari, open the file from Files.
