When you ask ChatGPT for a derivation, it answers in LaTeX. Paste that into Word and you usually get broken source — $E=mc^2$ as literal characters — because Word expects OMML equation objects, not Markdown math delimiters.

Dirty math ChatGPT often dumps

  • Standard: $E = mc^2$ and display $$…$$
  • TeX wrappers: \( a^2 + b^2 = c^2 \) and \[ … \]
  • Spaced parentheses / brackets: ( E = mc^2 ), [ \sum i ] when they look like math
  • Bare command forms with backslashes: (\frac12 mv^2)

Ordinary prose parentheses are left alone. Failed fragments get an explicit labeled note — never a silent drop.

Why does ChatGPT math paste as raw LaTeX in Word?

ChatGPT answers often use LaTeX delimiters like $...$, $$...$$, \(...\), or dirty wrappers such as ( E = mc^2 ). Word does not auto-build those into equations. ChatGPT2Word converts common LaTeX into editable OMML equations in the .docx.

Which math delimiters are supported?

Dollar math ($inline$ / $$display$$), TeX delimiters (\(...\) / \[...\]), and carefully detected dirty ChatGPT forms like ( LaTeX ) / [ LaTeX ] when the fragment looks like math — not ordinary parentheses.

Are the equations editable in Microsoft Word?

When conversion succeeds, yes — they are native Word equations (OMML), not screenshots. Fragments we cannot parse get an explicit [Math — could not convert: …] label instead of disappearing.
