ChatGPT LaTeX → editable Word equations

When you ask ChatGPT for a derivation, it answers in LaTeX. Paste that into Word and you usually get broken source — $E=mc^2$ as literal characters — because Word expects OMML equation objects, not Markdown math delimiters.

Dirty math ChatGPT often dumps

• Standard: $E = mc^2$ and display $$…$$
• TeX wrappers: \( a^2 + b^2 = c^2 \) and \[ … \]
• Spaced parentheses / brackets: ( E = mc^2 ), [ \sum i ] when they look like math
• Bare command forms with backslashes: (\frac12 mv^2)

Ordinary prose parentheses are left alone. Failed fragments get an explicit labeled note — never a silent drop.

Worked example: one derivation, three delimiter habits

ChatGPT rarely sticks to one math syntax in a single answer. This sample mixes inline dollars, a display block, a dirty parenthesis wrapper, and a real English parenthesis that must not become an equation. Paste it into the converter and read the preview before you download.

## Kinetic energy

A sentence can carry inline math: $K = \frac{1}{2}mv^2$.

The same relation as display math:

ChatGPT sometimes drops the dollars and writes ( \frac{1}{2} mv^2 ) instead.

A parenthetical remark (see the appendix) is prose. It should stay prose.

• The inline $K = ...$ should become an equation inside the paragraph, not a line of backslashes.
• The $$ block should become a display equation on its own line.
• The spaced ( \frac... ) form is the dirty wrapper this page exists for. It should normalize when it looks like math.
• “(see the appendix)” has no LaTeX commands. It should remain a parenthetical in the sentence.

If you paste that same Markdown straight into Word, every one of those lines stays source text. The .docx from this page is the file where supported fragments are equation objects. A screenshot of the rendered chat is neither: there is nothing to edit next week.

Troubleshooting: raw LaTeX, a labeled leftover, and Docs

Honest limits

• This is not a TeX distribution. Packages, custom macros, and a multi-line align the converter does not know will not become a publisher layout.
• A failed fragment is labeled [Math — could not convert: …]. It is not deleted, and it is not silently replaced with a wrong equation.
• LibreOffice will open the .docx. Treat equation editing as a Microsoft Word job when the object matters.
• Mermaid in the same answer is a picture, not math. That path is Mermaid to Word.

What “editable equation” excludes

OMML is Word’s equation object. When a fragment converts, you can click it in Microsoft Word and change a limit or a fraction without retyping the paragraph. That is the job. It is not a full TeX distribution. Align environments, custom macros, and packages the model invented will not become a publisher’s layout. Those fragments should show an explicit label in the document rather than disappearing. If the label appears, simplify the expression in the left pane — display math with a standard delimiter — and download again.

Do not screenshot a derivation to “preserve formatting.” The person grading or reviewing it cannot edit a picture, and neither can you next week. Quick workflow

1. Copy the ChatGPT answer (or upload a .md / .txt file). Include the delimiters; they are the signal, not noise.
2. Paste here and check the live preview for math markers rather than raw backslashes.
3. Press Ctrl/⌘+Enter or click Download .docx.
4. Open in Word and edit the equations with Word’s equation tools. LibreOffice will open the file; treat equation editing as a Word job when the object matters.

If a fragment shows an explicit leftover label, simplify that one formula and download again. Do not paste the raw source into the paragraph and call it finished.
