“Paste ChatGPT into Word” fails in two opposite ways, and the forum answers mix them up. One clipboard is Markdown from the Copy control: honest, complete, ugly in Word. The other is a selection of the rendered chat: prettier for a sentence, unreliable for a table or a code block. Cleaning one as if it were the other is why people end up retyping.

The sequence that stops the loop
- In ChatGPT, use Copy on the assistant message. Do not drag-select unless Copy is missing.
- Paste into the left pane above — not into Word yet.
- Read the preview. If a heading is still a bold sentence, add a Markdown heading before you export.
- Need a new file? Download .docx. Need this answer inside a memo that is already open? Copy formatted, then paste in Word.
- When Word’s paste icon appears, choose the option that matches the job. Keep Source Formatting preserves the headings you just made. Use Destination Theme when the memo’s styles must override them.
Ctrl/⌘+Enter downloads the .docx from this page. That shortcut is easier than another
round of Paste Special → Unformatted Text → manual styles, which throws away the structure you were
trying to save.
Worked example: a launch note Word will not style
This is the clipboard people paste when the answer is short enough that “it will be fine in Word” feels true. It has one heading, a bold phrase, a list, and a two-column price table. Paste it into the converter and compare the preview with a direct paste into Word.

## Launch noteis a paragraph that starts with hash marks. It is not Heading 2, so it will not appear in the Navigation pane.**one payment**may become bold, or it may stay asterisks, depending on which paste flavor Word picked. Copy formatted is the path into a memo that is already open. You get the heading and the table on the clipboard as HTML. You do not get a new file. Use it when the launch note belongs inside a document someone else started.

Lists, code, and math — the three that survive “unformatted” paste the worst
Unformatted text is the right Paste Special choice for a single messy sentence. It is the wrong choice for an answer that is a procedure. You lose nesting, you lose the difference between a heading and a step, and you lose tables entirely. Numbered steps that should restart under each heading stay correct when each Markdown list is its own list. If Word later welds them into one sequence, split them with Word’s numbering command — that is a list-style issue, not a reason to go back to asterisks.

Phone and an already-open Google Doc

How do I paste from ChatGPT into Word without losing formatting?
Do not paste the raw clipboard into Word. Click Copy under the ChatGPT answer, paste it into the converter on this page, then either click Copy formatted and paste into your open document, or click Download .docx. Headings, lists, tables, and code arrive as Word formatting instead of hash marks and pipes.
Why does ChatGPT paste into Word with hash marks?
The copy control puts Markdown on the clipboard. Word does not treat ## as Heading 2. Convert the Markdown to a .docx, or use Copy formatted on this page, instead of pasting the raw clipboard into Word.
I selected the formatted answer in the chat. Why is it still wrong?
A drag-selection often copies the rendered HTML, which Word interprets inconsistently: extra spacing, lost tables, and lists that restart. Prefer the message Copy control, then convert here.
Paste Special → HTML did not fix the table.
HTML paste helps only when the clipboard actually contains a table. Pipe-character Markdown is not an HTML table. The converter builds real Word cells from those pipes.
How do I paste into a document I already have open?
Click Copy formatted, switch to Word, and paste. If Word asks, choose Keep Source Formatting when you want the headings you just built. Use Destination Formatting only when the receiving template must win.
The numbered list restarts at 1 in every section.
That is Word continuing separate lists. After download, select the list and use Word’s numbering controls if one sequence should run through several headings. The converter keeps each Markdown list as its own list, which is usually what you want.
