Pick the Copilot you actually have
The query is ambiguous, and the wrong tutorial wastes an afternoon. GitHub Copilot writes inline completions inside an editor; there is no chat transcript to pour into Word unless you copied a Chat panel reply by hand. Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Word is already a Word document — exporting it “to Word” is a loop. The leftover job is the standalone chat: copilot.microsoft.com, Bing, or the Edge sidebar, where the answer is a conversation you cannot File → Save As.

From the sidebar to a file someone can comment on
- Finish the turn. Copy the assistant message, not the entire Edge window.
- Paste above. If the preview starts with a quoted headline from the tab you had open, delete that scaffold. Keep the answer, the list, and any table.

Copilot often bold-labels sections (“Summary”, “Steps”) without hash headings. Add
#or##in the left pane if you want those labels in Word’s Navigation pane. - Download
.docx. Open in Word or Word Online and apply your normal style set.
Enterprise sidebars sometimes refuse a rich copy and give you one plain paragraph. When that happens, the preview will look flat — that is the clipboard, not the converter. Copy again from copilot.microsoft.com in a full window, or paste the text and add headings yourself before download.
What converts, and what stays a Microsoft problem
Headings you marked, nested lists, links, GFM tables, fenced code, and common LaTeX follow the same rules as the Markdown to Word tool. Images embed only when they are real remote URLs your browser can fetch. A Copilot-generated chart that is a picture inside the chat UI will not become editable Excel data; if you only copied text, the picture was never on the clipboard.
We do not join your tenant, read OneDrive, or refresh a Copilot citation that points at an internal file. If the answer says “according to Contoso policy” and the policy link is an intranet URL, the Word hyperlink will point at that URL for people who already have access. It will not attach the policy document.
Privacy, stated narrowly
The .docx step does not upload your paste. Drafts can sit in localStorage on this browser. That claim is about ChatGPT2Word, not about whether Copilot itself retained the chat under Microsoft’s policies. Do not paste material your workplace forbids you to put in a third-party tab, even a local one, if local policy treats the site visit as the problem. When in doubt, use a machine and account your admin already allows, then download the file.

Which Copilot does this page convert?
Microsoft Copilot chat: copilot.microsoft.com, the Bing chat experience, and the Edge sidebar when you can copy the answer as text. It does not read GitHub Copilot suggestions, and it does not connect to Microsoft 365.
I already used Copilot inside Word. Do I need this?
No. If the draft is already in the document, keep editing there. This converter is for chat answers that still live in the browser and need to become a .docx.
How do I copy from Copilot chat?
Use the copy control on the message when you see one. If the click only copies plain text and the preview shows no headings, try the full site in a desktop browser rather than a tiny sidebar selection.
Will work content be uploaded?
Conversion runs in your browser. We do not receive the Markdown for the .docx step. That is not the same as a Microsoft tenant compliance review — your Copilot chat itself is still governed by Microsoft’s terms.
Does Copilot in Edge include page context I should strip?
Often yes. Sidebars quote the page you were reading. Delete navigation crumbs, cookie banners, and “based on this tab” scaffolding before download so the Word file is the answer, not the browser chrome.
Can I get Word styles, not just a paste?
Download .docx for heading styles, real tables, and editable equations. Copy formatted is for dropping rich text into a document that is already open.
